Steven Sgro Builders Partners with Adaptability Homes
Celebrating Steven Sgro Builders’ 30th Anniversary this year, Steven knows what it takes to build a quality home. His ability to create is inspired by three generations of builders. Originally from Springfield, Illinois, Steven learned the family business by working alongside his dad, uncle and brother from a very young age. Branching off on his own, Steven began building in the Sgro family developments of Oakbrook Estates and The Willows in Chatham, Illinois, and the final plats of Youngston Hills in Springfield to name a few.
Steven’s awareness of meeting people’s needs started with his first project that included wheelchair accessible features back in 1995. He believes in creating a personal experience for customers with high quality craftsmanship. Over the years, he has continued to have an uncompromised standard whether building spec or custom homes.
His custom projects hone in on the specific needs of the homeowners to better enhance the lifestyle that one expects. From luxury appointments to zero entry transitions, Steven’s expectations and results are a notch above. Many of his included items are extras with other builders. Applying smart equipment and minor adjustments to ordinary items, his solutions for longevity will help keep you in your home without the need to make adjustments over a longer period of time.
Steven Sgro Builders incorporates the most effective quality materials and technology that you will find today. Steven doesn’t just build houses and duplexes for people, he builds homes.

The Founder
Cathy Boerke started her career as a third-generation builder. Designing and building affordable homes for first time home buyers, she helped people find a way into home ownership without compromising integrity or quality of craftmanship. Cathy’s roots are planted in real estate, construction, and development in Springfield, Illinois. Yet, early into her career, she was called to New York and worked in real estate there.
Upon her return, Cathy’s interest expanded to the needs of older adults and disabled individuals. She marketed home health, private duty, assisted living, and hospice for a local family-owned agency. Between a personal experience and what she learned from work, she saw the importance of having modifications in place to keep people from having to move. Knowing that people prefer to stay in their home, she set out to find a way to make it happen.
Since Cathy has learned the benefits of aging in place, she sees how the applications benefit all ages and abilities. For those who are ready to address needs now, her business offers different approaches based on personal circumstances. For people wanting new construction but are not ready for adaptations, she implements hidden features for future use. Many of these upgrades that she includes are not standard with many builders. Smart technology and extra square footage in the right place add the luxury that any homeowner would love.
Certified Aging in Place Specialist Designation
Aging in Place is the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.
Our Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, CAPS, is trained in the unique needs of the older adult population. Although, any age can benefit from this approach. CAPSs apply strategies and techniques by building comprehensive and practical home modification solutions. Taken into consideration are any chronic or progressive conditions that address mobility, orthopedic, sensory and cognitive issues. Four out of five older adults, ages 50 and older suffer from at least on of these according to AARP. Nonurgent, progressive, or traumatic changes can trigger a need for change. It is never too early to consider and prepare for your future.

Cathy attained the Designation CAPS, Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, through the National Association of Home Builders.
